Why Chiropractic? Our "quick fix" society has conditioned us to believe that if we do not have symptoms, we are healthy. A quick look at a dictionary informs us that health is "a state of optimal physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity". In other words, one can have no symptoms whatsoever and still not be considered healthy. Taking this a step further, when we do respond by treating symptoms, we are often led to a false sense of security. After all, "the symptoms are now gone, I must be healthy..." What does this have to do with chiropractic? The majority of our society is of the understanding that chiropractors are only back doctors, specializing in low back pain, whiplash and headaches. Since chiropractic gets excellent results with these conditions, the association is only natural. Labeling a Doctor of Chiropractic a "back doctor" would be the equivalent of labeling a Doctor of Medicine a "mouth doctor". A D.C.'s most common method of care is through adjustments of the vertebral column, similar to an M.D.'s prescription of medicine that must be taken orally. One must know a little about human anatomy to fully understand the chiropractor's role. The nervous system is composed of the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves. As defined, the nervous system "is the organ system which along with the endocrine system, correlates the adjustments and reactions of an organism to internal and environmental conditions". The brain sends signals to and receives signals from every organ and tissue of the body. The millions and millions and millions of nerves are responsible for transmitting these signals. The spine is composed of 24 movable vertebrae plus the sacrum and pelvis. Its function is to act as a protective housing for the spinal cord. When each vertebra is properly positioned, there is no interference in the signals passing through the nerves. When vertebrae are subluxated (mis-aligned), signals will be interfered with. A chiropractor is trained to locate and correct vertebral subluxations, thereby removing nerve interference. Many people who are interested in health prevention are choosing chiropractic in addition to diet and exercise. Chiropractic is revolutionizing well-ness care. By maintaining a properly functioning nervous system, the body will have increased immunity and be able to adapt to the different stresses that life provides. A spinal examination can determine if you have vertebral subluxations. If so, you can join the many millions of satisfied patients reaping the benefits of chiropractic care. ©1993, 1999 djhDC
